19th New Generation Seminar

2009 Program Theme: "The Global Economic Crisis: Impacts and Responses in
Asia"

What: The NGS is a two-week education and dialogue program to build
friendships and promote understanding of regional issues among the rising
generation of leaders in the United States and Asia Pacific. The first week
is spent in Honolulu, Hawaii exploring Asia Pacific-U.S. regional issues in
areas such as international relations, security, economics, energy, and
environment, through discussions with one another, field visits and
meetings with regional experts. The second week involves study tour travel
program focused on the program theme.


Program Locations: Honolulu, Hawaii (USA); Seoul, Korea; and Hanoi, Vietnam


Funding: Through a grant from the Freeman Foundation, which has funded the
NGS since 1996, the East-West Center covers all air and ground travel
(including RT airfare to and from home country), meals, lodging and
program-related expenses for the participants during the two-week program.


Participants: 12-14 rising leaders, approximately 4 Americans and 8-10 from
Asia and the Pacific. Qualified candidates will be:

Working professionals in their mid-20s to late 30s;Political and community leaders or communicators with broad-based policy knowledge and influence;Fluent enough in English to operate effectively in a sophisticated, multi-cultural group Limited in their opportunity for international travel throughtheir current position (i.e., Foreign Ministry representatives tend not to be strong candidates);


Participants should have an interest in but need not be specialists in the
program theme. It is best that they be leaders with broad-based policy
knowledge, responsibility and influence who can benefit from learning about
a range of Asia Pacific issues in addition to the program theme.

A brief written statement about why you wish to participate in the 19th New Generation Seminar (not more than one typewritten double-spaced page, please). In responding please consider what you feel that you can contribute to the program and what you hope to gain from participating given your current leadership positions/roles, especially with regard to this year'sprogram theme.

One-paragraph professional biography summarizing your current work and highlighting your leadership experience and those aspects of your resume you think are most important for the selection committee.

Copy of resume to include professional and educationalbackground.

Resume or CV should clearly indicate years and type of education, title of position held, name of employer,dates spent at each position, and most importantly a brief outline of specific responsibilities or accomplishments in each position.

Two (2) letters of professional recommendation on official letterhead with current contact information for each person writing a recommendation.
