I am the next-generation antivirus: Fighting HIV/AIDS through Responsible Choices” online video contest for young people

In an effort to increase awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention among the Filipino youth, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) National Commission of the Philippines and the University of the East College of Education (UE CoEd), have launched the World AIDS Day 2010 Video Contest.

Still on its maiden run, this event is an excellent opportunity for high school students to promote positive values and beliefs towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS, which has been described as “hidden and growing” in the Philippines.

With the theme “I am the next-generation antivirus: Fighting HIV/AIDS through Responsible Choices”, the contest gives teenagers an opportunity to promote the cause through the use of the Internet (named one of the most popular after-school activities in the 2006 McCann-Erickson Youth Study) and multimedia.
Youngsters can showcase their talents in producing short videos by uploading their original, theme-related works to YouTube, the largest and most popular video-sharing community.

With its wide reach and worldwide juvenile following, YouTube is the most fitting avenue for this advocacy.
HIV/AIDS is a dreaded disease that is slowly gaining ground, with no signs of abating, mostly because of the difficulty to detect the illness due to commonplace early symptoms, and because of complicated management issues due to its complex nature and delicate transmission.

Hard-hit are the third-world countries just like the Philippines, with higher statistics and more casualties because of lack of awareness and lack of access to medication and treatment.

Worse, youth ages 15-24 have been identified as the age group with the highest risk of contracting the disease.
This underlines a greater need for vigilance, advocacy and support, especially among the young, and this activity aspires to do just that.

The contest is open to young adults attending public and private schools in Manila, one of the top five cities with the highest incidence of AIDS in the Philippines.

Two winners will be named: the Critic’s Choice award will be chosen by a 3-member jury panel (one of whom is a member of the PLHIV community), while the People’s Choice will be given to the video with the most number of online votes. Winners will each be receiving a P10,000.00 prize.

Deadline for submission of entries will be on November 15, 2010. Winners will be announced and awarded during the World AIDS Day on December 1, 2010 at the University of the East, C.M. Recto Ave., Manila.
For more details, please contact Remi or Marilou at 735-5471 loc. 384 or 385 or email us at educ@ue.edu.ph.

For contest mechanics, downloadable entry forms and other online info, you may also log on at www.ue.edu.ph or www.unesconatcom.ph.

ZOOMING IN ON BIODIVERSITY

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) is pleased to inform you of the successful launch of ZOOMING IN ON BIODIVERSITY, the first ASEAN-wide Photo Contest on Biodiversity.

In partnership with the European Commission, ASEAN Member States, and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, the contest aims to generate public awareness on the importance of sustaining our biodiversity. Powerful images of biodiversity’s importance to food security, health, livelihood, climate change, and other pressing issues and concerns can translate awareness into public support to reducing biodiversity loss – a silent crisis that could lead to humankind’s extinction.

The contest will run until 30 August 2009 and winners will be awarded during the ACB side event at the ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity in Singapore on 21 – 23 October 2009.

We would appreciate it if you could help ACB promote the photo contest within your network by distributing the attached announcement and poster design and by posting them on your website, with link to the ACB website www.aseanbiodiversity.org, until 30 August 2009.

We thank you in advance for your support.

THE FIFTH CURATOR:BRITISH COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL CURATORIAL COMPETITION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WHITECHAPEL GALLERY

Application deadline: Friday 4 September at 14:00 hours (GMT)

The Fifth Curator competition is a unique new opportunity for an aspiring curator to select an exhibition of works from the British Council Collection. We are looking for someone who is based permanently outside the UK, who believes they have the passion and knowledge to be a leading curator. The winning curator will be given unlimited access to the Collection, which includes over 8500 key works of British art and the resulting exhibition will be shown at the prestigious Whitechapel in the vibrant East end of London in April 2010.

The Fifth Curator exhibition will be the fifth and final exhibition in a series of five exhibitions showcasing the British Council Collection in the Whitechapel Gallery. Artist Michael Craig-Martin selected the first exhibition Passports: Great Early Buys from the British Council Collection, focusing on some of the most prescient acquisitions in the Collection’s long history.

‘My selection of works for this exhibition barely scratches the surface of the Collection. For every work I felt able to include there were half a dozen I had to leave out… This is a collection that contains hidden treasures, many of which I know will be included in subsequent exhibitions of this series.’ (Michael Craig-Martin)
For The Fifth Curator exhibition, aspiring curators from outside the United Kingdom are invited to submit an exhibition proposal which features works drawn exclusively from the British Council Collection. We particularly encourage new views and fresh perspectives on the Collection, as these are vital to ongoing debates about British art within an international context. The deadline for applications is 4 September 2009.

In November 2009, six short-listed applicants will be invited to London to take part in a week of professional development with the Visual Arts Department of the British Council. During this week, applicants will be encouraged to refine their proposals with the advice, guidance and resources of the Visual Arts team and they will be given the opportunity to visit the Whitechapel Gallery to view the proposed exhibition space and meet with the Whitechapel curatorial team. At the end of the week, the winning proposal will be selected by a panel of senior art world figures at a special presentation dinner.

The Fifth Curator competition forms part of the British Council’s ongoing commitment to promote the Collection to new audiences, both in the UK and worldwide and to engage aspiring curatorial talent with one of Britain’s finest collections of British Art. It also coincides with the re-launch of the new British Council Collection website (www.britishcouncil.org/collection) which features details on each of the works in the Collection.

Full details of the competition, including details of how to apply, can be found on our website: http://collection.britishcouncil.org/about/news/2210/2212.
