The Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies (of the ICD Academy for Cultural Diplomacy) offers educational programs in partnership with other leading organizations. Educational programs include Certificate Programs, Study Abroad Programs, Distance Learning Programs (designed specifically for  governmental officials, academics, and professionals who are not able to leave their current positions), and Postgraduate Programs (for individuals pursuing careers in academia, diplomacy, government, and/or the private sector, related either wholly or in part to the field of Cultural Diplomacy).

In our globalized world, Multiculturalism can be viewed as a natural phenomenon and result of the ever-changing global migration patterns. Many countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, USA, Australia, and Canada are constantly engaging with active multiculturalism policies, which are continually being amended and reinvented.

The pattern and process of multiculturalism is in fact transforming and increasing following economic, social and political changes in an interdependent and globalized world. It is therefore, essential that governments do not negate from the need to integrate their minority populations, while accepting and accommodating for diversity through policies that ensure better and sustained cultural cohesion.

The London Conference on Cultural Bridges will offer therefore a wide diversity of perspectives on the issue of intercultural relations internationally with a particular focus on the UK. The Conference will create and provide a proposal document that will be presented to the international community on how to overcome multicultural challenges. In addition the proposal document will offer best practices to achieve a successful and harmonic multicultural society. The Reykjavík Congress on Human Rights
“Human Rights Protection & International Law: The Multifaceted Dilemma of Restraining and Promoting International Interventions”

The international community acknowledges the increasing and persistent cases of mass atrocities and crimes against humanity occurring on a vast scale.

Understanding the complexity in bringing these crimes to an end, the Reykjavík Congress on Human Rights aims to argue and debate the notion of the responsibility to protect from a human rights perspective, taking into account the divergent dimensions in restraining or promoting international intervention.

Through the discussions and exchange of this conference we aim to consider the current most vehement cases of human rights violations, and further comprehend the varied issues and approaches to these mass atrocities and crimes against humanity from a theoretical perspective, analyzing the complex layers and structures, and taking into account the ethical dilemma surrounding the responsibility to protect and international intervention.

The 2013 Congress will create and publish a discussion document that will be presented to the international community on how to overcome the dilemma of restraining and promoting all forms of International Interventions based on coordinated global coalition efforts between governments, NGOs and International Institutions.

The 2013 International Conference on the African Union & Cultural Diplomacy
“African Perspectives: An African Vision for Positive Developments in Africa”

This unprecedented gathering within the African continent will seek to highlight Africa´s self-attained achievements with regards to its standing in the international community, as well as its increasing emancipation from the often assumed dependency on the Western world. The focus will be on the role and successes of the African Union as an intergovernmental regional organization seeking to combat political, social, and economic inequalities.  Past achievements will be considered while simultaneously accenting the future challenges the AU faces.

It will be demonstrated that the application of Cultural Diplomacy is pervasive within the African Union´s activities, as it has charged itself with the task of uniting highly differentiated cultures within Africa with the aim of achieving ´greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and the people of Africa. Cultural Diplomacy will be shown to support and solidify such efforts.

Conference Location

Based in Pretoria, South Africa, the conference will be hosted at the African Union Parliament and at a number of important political, historic, and cultural locations across the city.

Speakers during the Conference will include head of state and ministers, leading figures and experts from international politics, economics, academia, diplomacy, civil society, and the private sector. The European-African Alliance Conference 2013
“Enhancing the Inter-cultural Dialogue between Europe and Africa to promote the Stability and economic Development within the two Continents”

International Youth Conference “Youth Awareness of Climate Change”

Background

The program will focus on the discussion of climate environment issues covering from the Copenhagen Summit, youth involvement and initiatives as well as the scheme Pro-Poor Conservation.
It aims to inspire young people and community the importance of working together and sharing each other the alternatives policies and programs to reduce global emission and to raise awareness on the climate change among the youth. 

During the program, participants will formulate some recommendations for policy makers, international and government Institutions, and other stakeholders. The recommendation can be implemented through the action plan to be conducted and organized by youth, NGO, Governmental and International Organizations. The Conference could create a strategic action and recommendation toward related government institutions and regional/ international organizations. 

The International Youth Conference is organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Indonesia in collaboration with the University of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

Venue and Date

The Conference will be conducted from November 7 to 12, 2010 at the Wanagama Resort, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Participant’s Eligibility

• Must be 18 to 30 years old
• those who are interested in climate change, environment issues and youth development
• Must be representing youth organizations or institutions
• Must have good command of English
• Willingness to participate in the discussions and activities
• Must be physically fit to travel
• Must have valid passport six months before the departure date of the program. Applicants without passport details will not be considered.

Expenses

     The Organizer will provide accommodation and local transport to all participants from all participating countries. The international airfare travel expenses must be paid by each participating country or organization.

Call for Papers: Panel on Notions of Independence in Southeast Asian Cinemas for Euroseas 2010

The panel looks forward to papers that investigate the notions of independence in Southeast Asian cinemas, as well as the historical shifts in the meaning of the term in its different contexts and localities such as in relation to notions of independence in Europe and United States. Interrogations on the various sites of contentions of independent filmmaking vis-à-vis mainstream are also welcome.

The panel emerges out of a lively and growing "independent" cinema scene in Southeast Asia - particularly Indonesia, Philippines , Malaysia , Thailand , Singapore and Vietnam – where the so-called "digital revolution," has been synonymous with "independence" and hailed as the way to liberate filmmakers from the hegemonic grip of Hollywood and "local hollywoods ."

In such contexts, the term "independent" has become a fraught and problematic nomenclature. Once limited to a small select group of filmmakers working outside of the commercial film industry, several sectors have now appropriated the term. The panel thus proposes to delve into the different and changing notions of independence in the different Southeast Asian countries. Among the questions the panel wishes to address and ponder on: What does it really mean to be independent? Is it in the mode of production? It is in the mode of distribution? Is it in the content of the film? Is it in the intent of the filmmaker? Independent in relation to what? If independent films use mainstream modes of distribution and exhibition, do they lose their independence? If a filmmaker receives production grants from corporate or government support, does it mean his/her film is no longer independent? If an independent film aspires to make a profit, does it diminish its independence? Are there degrees of independence? How are independent films perceived and received by the audience?

Topics of interest also include but are not limited to: studies on particular independent filmmakers; aesthetics of independent films; the surfacing of independent film production companies and film groups; emerging independent modes of production, distribution and exhibition; the appropriation and/or cooptation of the digital technology by mainstream film industries in the guise of independence; the role and effect of international film festivals in independent filmmaking; the impact of the digital technology on independent filmmaking; funding independent filmmaking in Southeast Asia; sustainability of independent filmmaking; censorship; and the role of state and private institutions on independent filmmaking.

International Youth Conference 2009

Background:

The State Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia and National Commission of Indonesia to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with UNESCO Jakarta Office will organize the International Youth Conference 2009 with the theme, “The Role of Youth to Establish Peace, toward a Future World without Violent Radicalization”. The conference aims to sensitize youth with idea on the importance of peace, to promote ethical principles among youth and to support the efforts of youth to foster a culture of peace and tolerance.

Venue and date:

The conference will be held in Indonesia on September 28 to October 2, 2009 in Banten and West Java Provinces , Indonesia .

Qualification:

* Filipino citizen
* Between 18 to 30 years old
* Those who are interested in peace issues and youth development
* Must have a good command in English
* Of good moral character
* Physically and mentally fit to travel
* Preferably a first time traveler; former recipients of NYC funded international programs from September 28, 2008 to September 28, 2009 are disqualified to apply
* Must have a valid passport until at least six (6) months after the date of the departure for the program. Applicants without any passport details shall not be considered.

Expenses:

8th Asia-Europe Classroom Network Conference

In collaboration with the Sønderborg Municipality with support from the Danish Ministry of Education, Hørup Centralskole, Nyborg Friskole and Herfølge Skole, the 8th Asia-Europe Classroom Network Conference will take place from 26 to 30 October 2009 in Sønderborg, Denmark.

Formerly known as the AEC International Teachers’ Conference, the AEC-NET Conference is an annual meeting since year 2001 that gathers secondary and high school teachers and educators from Asia and Europe who take a keen interest in fostering collaborations among their students using infocomm (ICT) methods and tools. The online collaborative projects initiated at each Conference are referred to as the AEC Projects.

The theme for the 8th AEC-NET Conference will be “The Impact of Climate Change and Sustainable Development Within the School Community in Asia and Europe”.

WORLD YOUTH ALLIANCE ASIA PACIFIC DECADE OF DIGNITY AND DEVELOPMENT (DDD) INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Decade of Dignity and Development, WYA 1999-2009, is a celebration of WYA's ten years promoting the dignity of the person in policy and culture. The DDD celebrations will showcase young people, public and private sector leaders, and best practices around the world. WYA Asia Pacific (WYAAP) will be hosting a 4-day international conference for the region's youth in July 22-25, 2009 in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

The WYAAP conference will focus on Good Governance and Marginalization, two important issues in the Asia Pacific region. Marginalization is prevalent in all our countries and may be experienced in different ways – because of one's religion, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. WYAAP is always searching for ways to address these development concerns and realizes that the key is good governance. For good governance to become reality, it is the responsibility not only of the government, but also of civil society and the business sector. To further understand the effects of marginalization, individuals and organizations from the different sectors will be invited to share how their practices address the problems that we face.

As stated in WYA’s Declaration on Development, authentic development happens when it is based on the understanding and recognition of the dignity of the human person. As such, WYA believes that the authentic development of society can occur only in a culture that fosters integral human development. Each person has
dignity, which is inviolable and does not change regardless of one’s circumstances in life.

Together with this understanding comes the important role that good governance plays. The WYA Declaration on Good Governance recognizes that good governance stems from th e responsibility of every person, a t all levels of society, to work in solidarity for the protection of hu ma n dignity. Leaders bear a particular responsibility to uphold the dignity of the human person in their governance. This event will create awareness of prevalent issues a nd provide a venue for valuabl e discussions and cultural exchange s to promote human dignity. Global Challenges and the Conference “Our Common Future”

At the beginning of the 21st Century we are experiencing social, environmental, cultural, and technological changes at an unprecedented pace. Even under rapidly changing circumstances it still holds true that the best way of approaching future challenges is actively confronting them, in suggesting and discussing strategies and solutions as well as mapping out new concepts and approaches for the way ahead. Therefore, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Deutsche Messe and the Stiftung Mercator will provide a platform for leading intellectuals, researchers, business people, and politicians as well as promising young researchers and future leaders in all branches of society to enter into a dialogue culminating in the conference “Our Common Future” to be held from 2 to 6 November 2010 in Hanover and Essen.

Invitation to a Dialogue between Generations

It is the objective of the conference to further the exchange of ideas among established as well as upcoming young researchers, politicians, business people, and decision-makers. Eminent speakers such as Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, Homi K. Bhabha, Paul Collier and Nancy Birdsall have already confirmed their participation. The Volkswagen Foundation offers up to 100 grants for highly motivated young researchers from all over the world and invites them to attend the conference, take part in the plenary sessions, topical workshops, and panel discussions.

Getting Prepared

In preparation for the conference “Our Common Future” an international and interdisciplinary self-organizing network of young researchers, the “Global Young Faculty”, will meet regularly over the course of the year 2010. The “Global Young Faculty” is initiated and funded by the Stiftung Mercator in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI). The grants offered by the Volkswagen Foundation also include travel funds for the cooperation with the “Global Young Faculty”. Joint workshops will be held in June or July 2010 in Germany. These workshops will provide ample opportunities for fresh thinking and mutual learning from each other.

16th International Youth Leadership Conference

20 -25 July 2008

The 16th International Youth Leadership Conference is a week-long youth forum on world politics, international relations and international law.

The most recent conferences welcomed around 100 students from an average of 35different countries worldwide, with a strong emphasis on cross-cultural, international youth empowerment, and an open-minded exchange of different perspectives on global issues.

Participants play active roles in simulations of important world organizations:

-Model European Parliament Proceeding

We Are One

Asia Europe Youth Dialogue "We Are One" is organized by World Youth Foundation (“NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations”) in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, the State Government of Melaka, and various other agencies. The Dialogue also has the support of the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) and is tentatively scheduled to be held on 30th June to 4th July 2007, Melaka, Malaysia.

This Dialogue will contribute to the forthcoming ASEM Meeting of Ministers on Cultures to be held in 16th – 17th July 2007 in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia is the host of this important event and supporting this Dialogue seems an important step in cooperating cultural understanding among youth in the ASEM region.

The ASEM Youth Dialogues have been conceived to provide an opportunity for youth in Asia and Europe to exchange perspectives on themes identified as priorities by the Asia-Europe Meeting during the biennial ASEM Summits. They create and foster human networks among young people by encouraging a common vision. This Dialogue also increases initiatives in the field of Asia-Europe youth co-operation through the development of action-oriented youth initiatives as concrete and substantial contributions by youth to the ASEM process over the medium to long term.

This Dialogue will contribute to forge partnership between Asia and Europe that is based in equal partnership, mutual respect and mutual understanding – all part of the ASEM process. It will provide Malaysia and Malaysian’s to showcase and promote its success story in maintaining racial harmony.

“We are One" will also provide a unique opportunity for young people from Asia and Europe to discuss and understand the different cultural and social priorities and beliefs in their regions thus cultivating a culture of peace and dialogue. The objectives of this Dialogue are:

Ø To create awareness of cultural differences at local, national and international level, as well as to identify existing common ground.
Ø To increase inter-cultural dialogue and build bridges between those of different faith and ethnicity especially between young people of Asia and Europe.
Ø To encourage initiatives aimed at promoting understanding of the diverse cultures of countries in Asia and Europe particularly among the younger generation.



Proposed Outcome
Ø To recognize “Outstanding Cultural Youth Ambassadors” as a programme organized under the banner of UNESCO
Ø To develop local and national projects with the view of foster partnerships with youth organizations and international agencies.
Ø A cultural co-existance declaration by participants on how to promote cultural diversity among young people of Asia and Europe

Dialogue Venue
The venue of the Dialogue will be The Legacy Hotel, 146, Jalan Hang Tuah, 75300 Melaka, Malaysia (Tel : +606-2816868 / www.thelegacy.com.my)

Application Criteria :
· Be a national of an ASEM country
· 2 participants per country
· 18 – 30 years of age
· Youth representatives from various national youth coordination councils or a civil society organization, including those working in institutions promoting cultural dialogue, think tanks or those in accomplishments like education, arts, media from Asia and Europe.
· An official of the Ministry of Youth or a related government agency
· Have a good understanding of the theme and the relevant policies in their respective countries
· Willing and being able to participate actively for the whole duration of the project
· Ready to present a "Situational Report" from respective countries.
· Proficient in English and able to do presentations in English; is a must
· Geographical and gender balance will be respected

Air Travel Subsidy :
The Foundation regrets to inform you that at the moment there are no funds available for air travel subsidy. The Foundation has applied for air-travel subsidy to help defray some of the expenses incurred by participants. However, we are have yet to receive any positive reply and will keep you informed. Hence participants are strongly encouraged to fund the own air-travel. The Foundation will provide accommodation, meals and local hospitality for the duration of the Dialogue.

Application Procedure :
Please fill the attached application form and send by either email or fax to the Foundation latest by 30 May 2007. Please include in not more than 20 lines a brief biographical note of yourself on a separate sheet of paper.

Upon receiving of the application forms a Selection Committee will review all the applications and select the most deserving participant. A letter of confirmation will then be sent to successful participants with the necessary information. You can use this letter to apply your visa.

ATHGO International 2007 Global Forum –June 6-8, 2007 - UN Headquarters, New York

On June 6-8, 2007, will be taking place the Alliance Toward Harnessing Global Opportunities Global Forum at the UN Headquarters in New-York, USA. This forum will involve over 400 selected students and young professionals coming from various national and international Universities, Colleges and Civil Organizations and staff from UN Permanent Missions.
