The Open Society Fellowship supports outstanding individuals from around the world. The fellowship enables innovative professionals—including journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners—to work on projects that inspire meaningful public debate, shape public policy, and generate intellectual ferment within the Open Society Institute.

The fellowship focuses on four themes: National Security and the Open Society; Citizenship, Membership and Marginalization; Strategies and Tools for Advocacy and Citizen Engagement; and Understanding Authoritarianism. OSI also supports a limited number of fellows whose work focuses on other topics within the scope of its mission.

This position is set up in line with our mission to promote entrepreneurship to the youth of ASEAN. To help you better understand our organization and what we do, below is a brief introduction to the NES and AYLN(Asempreneurs Youth Leader network).

NES(National University of Singapore Entrepreneurship Society) is a student organization in our university that has enjoyed many years of success and recognition in promoting entrepreneurship among the youth in Singapore. As part of NES's vision to reach out to the youth of ASEAN, the ASEANpreneurs Youth Leaders Network (AYLN) was officially launched in Singapore in May 2008 by Dr Soeung Rathchavy, Deputy Secretary General of the ASEAN Secretariat and Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliament Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Singapore. The network serves as a platform for interaction and sharing of entrepreneurial ideas, knowledge and experience amongst ASEAN youth. Our flagship project is the ASEANpreneurs Youth Leaders Exchange, also taken place in May 2008, which saw 29 university students from 8 ASEAN countries gather in Singapore and engage in meaningful entrepreneurship-related activities.

Coming up in our second year, we believe that by having one Country Manager from each ASEAN country who will act as an ASEANpreneurs ambassador in the respective country, information about ASEANpreneurs's initiatives and entrepreneurship can reach the local youth more effectively. We wish to be able to work closely with this person in the near future and support him/her in any initiatives that would champion youth entrepreneurship in ASEAN.

Fullbright Scholarship

The Philippine-American Education Foundation (PAEF-Fulbright) is inviting potential and interested qualified professionals and faculty to turn in their complete applications for Advanced Research and/or University Lecturing projects in the United States for academic year 2009-2010 on or before October 13, 2008.

Eligible fields are those related to Philippine literature and the arts, history, political and social sciences, economics, education, and environmental studies. Grants are awarded for a period of three to five months.

Candidates for the lecturing and/or research award should have the endorsement of pertinent departments of U.S. universities. Candidates for the research award who have contacts with their appropriate counterparts in U.S. educational institutions are encouraged to apply.

Proposals may also be for a combination of lecturing and research. Preference is given to those without recent experience in the United States. Grants are NOT for the principal purpose of attending conferences, visiting universities or organizations, nor completing doctoral dissertations.

The award covers international travel (budget economy-ONLY for the scholar), maintenance allowance, professional development allowance, a settling-in allowance, and limited medical insurance for the successful scholar. A modest monthly allowance will be provided for ONE dependent (subject to the availability of funds) provided the dependent stays at least 80% of the scholar's duration in the U.S.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation Fellowship

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation is offering international fellowships to women for graduate and post-graduate study at accredited institutions in the United States of America or in any other country, for academic year 2009-2010.

The AAUW Educational Foundation is one of the largest sources of funding exclusively for graduate women around the globe in the pursuit of educational and professional opportunities through fellowships, grants and special awards. International Fellowships are awarded to women who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, but intend to pursue full-time graduate or post-graduate study or research.

Women applicants may wish to specialize in international relations, public policy studies or gender studies. As an affiliate of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW), applicants from the Philippines may identify an accredited institution for their study or research in or outside of the United States.

Preference is given to applicants committed to the advancement of women and girls, as demonstrated in their academic qualifications, professional work and research proposal.

Who is eligible?
Graduate students and postdoctoral social scientists/faculty who have previously studied some econometrics. The seminar is limited to 20 participants.

Seminar content
This seminar will focus on the use of econometric methods to study the institutions –laws, rules, customs, and norms—that govern real economies and affect transaction costs. Topics to be covered include the investigation of micro data, the evaluation of social programs, and the management of panel data. The sessions will be both theoretical and applied. STATA will be used in a computer lab.

Topics will include
# Basics: linear estimation models, exogeneity and causality, bootstrapping
# Endogeneity: instrumental variables and two-stage least squares
# Linear models for panel data
# Program evaluation: random and stratified design, inference in small samples, matching estimators
# Regression discontinuity designs. double inference methods
# Dynamic panel data models


Professor Sebastian Galiani has published widely in the field of institutions. He is a faculty member of the Ronald Coase Institute and of Washington University in St. Louis, USA. He has twice won the Research Medal of the Global Development Network and numerous other awards for his research.

Three of the four days will be spent on econometric technique. On the remaining day, participants will hear lectures on institutions by Nobel laureate Douglass North and other distinguished scholars from China and abroad, in a conference held at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

"The Democracy Video Challenge"

International Video Competition Launched at the UN
Project Aims to Inspire Global Dialogue Among Youth

New York, September 16, 2008 -- "The Democracy Video Challenge", a global call to action, was launched yesterday at the United Nations, supported by a partnership of democracy and youth organizations, the film entertainment industry, academia, and the US government. The Challenge, which was also unveiled on line, invites young citizens from around the world to create short videos that complete the phrase: "Democracy is ..." The video contest seeks to enhance the global dialogue on the value of democracy. The International Youth Foundation is among the sponsoring organizations.

"Film is a window into our common humanity -- the challenges and joys that make up the universal human experience. The young filmmakers taking part in this challenge will harness the magic of this powerful art form to connect to people around the world in a global discussion on democracy," said Michael Apted, President of the Directors Guild of America, a partner in the Democracy Video Challenge.

"Today's young people are fast becoming their country's leaders, voters, and civic activists, leading democratic change in their communities and finding solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges," added William S. Reese, CEO of the International Youth Foundation. "The Democracy Challenge offers them a rare opportunity to define their vision of what democracy is and can be for the 21st century. We plan to actively encourage young people everywhere to contribute to this competition by working through our global network of more than 160 partner organizations in 70 countries."

The Democracy Video Challenge partners include the Center for International Private Enterprise, the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, the International Youth Foundation, the Directors Guild of America, the Motion Picture Association of America, NBC Universal, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, TakingITGlobal, USC's School of Cinematic Arts, and the U.S. Department of State.

Seven winners will be chosen on line by the general public in June 2009, with YouTube (www.youtube.com/democracychallenge) providing the platform. Winners will travel, all expenses paid, to the United States to claim their prize in October 2009. Gala screenings of the winning videos will be held in Hollywood, New York, and Washington, DC, and the winners will meet with democracy advocates from government, media, and civil society organizations.

Since 1980, this annual three-week training session brings together approximately 120 participants from over 60 countries. The IHRTP provides a unique opportunity for human rights workers to deepen their understanding of human rights and of the essential role of human rights education in effecting change. As recognized by the United Nations:

“There is a growing consensus that education in and for human rights is essential and can contribute to both the reduction of human rights violations and the building of free and peaceful societies.
