The Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative, in partnership with the National Disaster Coordinating Council, would like to invite you to join the re-run of the Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Framework, an online course of the World Bank Institute. The CDRMF which will be held on October 13 to November 14, 2008, is the prerequisite of seven (7) specialized courses offered by WBI under the Natural Disaster Risk Management Program. I Am A Changemaker

Three (3) university and community-based youth organisations nationwide will get more chance of winning Php 100,000 to implement their projects with I Am a Changemaker, a project grant competition organised by the British Council as the deadline for the submission of entries is extended to October 31, 2008.

The competition is about how issues on education, environment, and intercultural diversity can be addressed through youth leadership and social entrepreneurship.

Three (3) winners representing Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will be selected to receive a grant of up to Ph 100,000 each for the implementation of their projects within a 6-month period.

The project, with support from Ayala Young Leaders Alliance, Studio 23, and NU 107 aims to recognise the role of young people as important partners in nation-building by developing their abilities to make a difference in their communities.

Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance

The Center for Asia Pacific Women in Politics (CAPWIP) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN-ISDR), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Women Environment Development Organization (WEDO) is pleased to invite you to the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance. The theme of the congress is: Gender in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction. The congress will be held on October 19-22, 2008 in Makati City, Philippines.

The congress promises to be the first and biggest global forum for climate change experts, parliamentarians, decision makers in government, environment organizations and stakeholders to discuss legislation and policies that will introduce gender in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

UNDP Leadership Course for Young Leaders

Galing Pook is coordinating the rollout of a leadership course for young leaders in governance in partnership with UNDP Regional Center Bangkok. We have 2 workshops, one for Visayas and Mindanao and another in Luzon. You may wish to nominate emerging young leaders with ages between 25 to 35 to participate in the leadership course. We have very limited slots of only 15 participants for each workshop, but we hope to get participants from various sectors with your help.

The Visayas-Mindanao Workshop will be help in Davao City on September 22 – 26. Participants should come from the Visayas and Mindanao. Deadline for submission of applications is on September 8.

The Luzon Workshop will be held in Manila on October 12 to 18. Participants should come from Luzon. Deadline of application is on September 22.

The project will support transportation and accommodation / food during the course. Please feel free to forward this email and the attachments to your partners who may want to participate in the course.

Scholarship for International Peace Studies at the University for Peace

The International Peace Studies Dual Campus Master Programme is a shared initiative between the Nippon Foundation and the UN-Mandated University for Peace, in collaboration with Ateneo de Manila University, which aims to provide students from Japan and other Asian countries with an opportunity to pursue a peace studies post graduate degree with a content-based language-training module.

The programme offers support for individuals who do not have a proficient command of English to work in this increasingly common international language and to become comfortable in their professional abilities as they gain academic skills. As part of the programme, students have also the opportunity to apply their academic and practical knowledge through a four-month internship at the end of the Master courses.

Students accepted in the programme will be automatically granted full scholarships provided by the Nippon Foundation. A full scholarship includes: tuition fee, the language module, academic materials, and air travel and living

In this 19-month intensive academic programme, the students undertake courses at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines as well as at the San José UPEACE headquarters in Costa Rica. It is accomplished in three terms which start at the end of the language-training module. The programme begins in April 2008.

The Dual Campus M.A. programme has been planned primarily for receiving students from several Asian countries where English is not a widely used language, such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Exceptionally, students from other Asian countries may be admitted.

Asian Youth Fellowship (AYF)

The AYF preparatory course before entering Japanese Graduate School as Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship student is offered by The Japan Foundation. AYF program is open to university graduates in the region who wish to contribute to regional cooperation after obtaining a Master and/or Ph. D. Degree in Japanese Graduate Schools as follows:

Features of the Asian Youth Fellowship Program

AYF consists of the following component:

- Coordination of a host professor and research plan development during the preparatory course in Japan
- Preparatory course (Japanese Language and cultural activities)
- Follow ups after completing the preparatory course

The scholarship grantees shall receive a preparatory course in the Japanese language for approximately 7 months, at The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai, Japan. The preparatory course is developed for people who have never learned Japanese language before. Grantees are provided with dormitory. Accompanying family is NOT allowed during the preparatory course.

After completing the preparatory course, grantees will be proceeding to Japanese graduate schools as Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students (principally Research Student) .

Field of Study


Any of the fields in Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering and Natural Science is acceptable..
Students pursuing study areas that would contribute to his/her country or region will be given preference.
* Technical training course is excluded.

Qualifications

- Nationality: Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam.
- Age: under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2010 (i.e. born on or after April 2, 1975)
- Academic Backgrounds: university or college graduates with a bachelor's degree or Master's degree (those who will graduate from a university or college by the Registration Day of AYF may apply, but the grants may be CANCELLED if grantees fail to arrive in Kansai on the starting day of the preparatory course.)

Other requirements:
a. Good proficiency in English is required.
b. Military men and military civilian employees registered on the personnel list are excluded.
c. Applicants should be in good health.
d. The applicant whose spouse has already won a Japanese Government scholarship will not be selected as a grantee, and likewise in the case of a couple applying at the same time.
e. The applicant who has been awarded a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship in the past will not be selected as a grantee unless he/she has had a few years' research or teaching experience after returning to his/her country.

Grant Coverage during the Preparatory Course

-Expenses necessary for participation in the official curriculum (transportation, teaching material, etc.)
-Meals during the program (partly in the form of cash allowances) and a set amount of allowances to cover miscellaneous living expenses.
-Accommodation (a single room) at the Institute
-Overseas travel insurance for disease and injury for the duration of the program
-Round-trip, economy-class airline between the nearest international airport from the residence and Kansai International Airport (Osaka, Japan) on the most direct and economical route.

Japanese visa as a trainee
*The above terms of the grant will be effective for the period of the preparatory course. After completing the AYF Program, grantees will proceed to Japanese universities as the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students.
Allowances, accommodations, and other status are subject to Monbukagakusho' s regulations.

Selection


Japanese diplomatic missions concerned, in cooperation with the foreign governments concerned, will select preliminary candidates from among applicants by means of a review of the documents submitted.

Those who have been selected as the preliminary candidates will be recommended to Asian Youth Fellowship Committee, Tokyo, Japan. The Committee will select grantees from among the preliminary candidates by means of an interview made in their respective countries by a mission member assigned and dispatched by the Committee.
Final announcement in writing will be provided by the Embassy of Japan after the AYF Committee. The grantees of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship will be finally selected, on condition that they have completed the AYF preparatory course successfully, after the university placement has been made.

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit the following documents according to the instruction given by the Embassy of Japan in their own country by the date appointed. The documents submitted will not be returned.

In the last year the YLP has developed a reputation as an innovative approach to leadership development given its unique methodology of linking executive learning with social entrepreneurship and community needs.

The November 2008 programme will begin with an academic MBA-style component in Hong Kong and will be followed by an on-site project based experience in northern India. As part of the on-site project, participants will work to create a business plan to attract investment for Drishtee, an Indian enterprise that is dedicated to creating a sustainable, scalable platform of entrepreneurship for the development of India’s rural economy.

Participants will include about 25 executives from multi-national companies, SMEs, civil society groups and universities. Through the programme, these individuals will gain; an appreciation of Asian globalisation challenges across sectors; hands-on experience to understand future customers and future markets and valuable cross-cultural leadership and partnering skills. Each participant will be evaluated on their performance.

Past participants have included individuals from global companies such as; Standard Chartered, JP Morgan, HP, UBS, Shell, MTRC, CLSA, Cathay Pacific, Beijing Li-Ning Sports, Gammon Construction, Shui On, Credit Suisse, Petronas, V.S. Dempo, e2e – Velankani Group, and the Cheung Kong Group among others.
